The Billings County School District found their school, which was built around the turn of the century to be inadequate for their students. The building was a three-story structure with no handicap accessibility, an outdated mechanical system with no ventilation, very poor energy efficiency, structural defects and undersized classroom spaces.

The school district was faced with complying with strict building requirements for their historic setting. The new structure was built beside the old school so school could continue during the building process, with design elements and material to compliment the other historic structures of Medora. The new school not only serves as a place for public education, but as a community activities center and play area during all times of the year.
